Villagers (Acoustic Show) | Live at Control Club

Irish indie-folk act Villagers will perform for the first time in Bucharest this Autumn – November 15 at Control Club – with an intimate acoustic show in support of their sixth studio album, That Golden Time, released in May 2024. Paul Tihan will be opening the night with his indie poetry.

Tickets are now available via Eventbook.

Dublin has a long and legendary tradition of writers, and since Conor O’Brien adopted the name Villagers, the singer-songwriter-instrumentalist-dramatist has joined the club with a rich, deep and diverse body of work.

Critically acclaimed, Villagers have been awarded Ireland's Choice Music Prize, nominated for UK's Mercury Music Prize and Conor has been awarded two prestigious Ivor Novello's for his songwriting.

Villagers’s sixth studio album, That Golden Time, released in May 2024 via Domino, underlines O’Brien’s unwavering commitment to a uniquely nuanced, literate and melodic fusion of folk, pop and rock that has won awards and accolades from peers such as Paul Weller, Elvis Costello, Damon Albarn and Guy Garvey.

After the band-centred sessions of Villagers’ fifth album Fever Dreams, That Golden Time’s solo-centric core was not forced on O’Brien by lockdown. “For me, That Golden Time has an internalised voice, so much so that I almost found it impossible to let anyone else in, to the point of mixing it myself,” he says. “It’s probably the most vulnerable album I’ve made. I played and recorded everything in my apartment, and finally, towards the end, invited people in. But I was always dreaming of embellishments and arrangements so I could never have made a fully sparse solo album.”

“This is O’Brien’s finest collection of melodies yet, reflecting candour, tenderness and pthos with no bare polemic to disrupt the intimate tone.” – Mojo

“An intriguing new chapter in the Villagers story that will reward listeners who spend some real time unwrapping it properly.” – Clash Music

“O’Brien at his best on the Eno-ish lullaby “First Responder”, where strings and lap steel drift in like a summer breeze.” – Uncut

Paul Tihan is an artist from Iași who, after the raw-acoustic journey in the past, has now turned into a quintet that sheds light on his thoughts and experiences. The character of the project is not framed in any musical genre, but is more of a journey unfolded in chapters presenting the subtle layers of life. In musical terms, Paul has categorized his project as indie poetry rock.
